Philip "NaturalPhil" Johnson has spent thirty years behind a drum kit — from Hampton Roads to Seoul to a corner of the Dr. Phillips Center. Identified by the Norfolk press as a prodigy at eleven, he built a career that carried him onto international stages across South Korea, Europe, Africa, and South America before he relocated his family to Central Florida. Along the way he's directed music for the B.B. King All-Star Band, toured internationally with Don Omar, produced for Disney, judged the Guitar Center National Drum Competition, and built Drum & Spin — a genre-blending percussion-and-DJ live show that didn't exist before he made it, debuting at the Dr. Phillips Center in 2025 and returning to Judson's Live in November 2026. He also serves as Band Director at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville, Florida, and is currently developing The Shakes Live, a mobile studio and pop-up venue.

In 1994, the Norfolk press called an eleven-year-old drummer a prodigy. Three decades later, Philip "NaturalPhil" Johnson is still learning. His path from that first press mention to a Dr. Phillips Center debut runs through international tours, Disney production credits, music direction for the B.B. King All-Star Band, and a decade quietly building the infrastructure for a new kind of live show. Johnson's education began in the pews of his home church in Hampton Roads, Virginia, where he first learned the pocket, dynamic control, and feel that would define his playing. That grounding carried him onto stages across South Korea, Europe, Africa, and South America as a touring and session drummer, and into the music direction chair for the B.B. King All-Star Band and Don Omar's international tours. He has produced music for Disney, judged the Guitar Center National Drum Competition, and built a reputation among presenters and fellow musicians as a player who can be trusted with the room. Since relocating his family to Central Florida, Johnson has turned that same discipline toward building rather than only performing. Drum & Spin — his genre-blending percussion-and-DJ live experience — debuted at the Dr. Phillips Center in 2025 and returns to Judson's Live in November 2026. MoodDesigner, his production and collaboration project, has been heard on Beat Shazam (Fox). The Shakes Live, currently in development, is a mobile studio and pop-up venue built on the idea that working musicians deserve infrastructure lighter and closer than what's currently on offer. Every Sunday, Johnson serves as Band Director at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville, Florida — one of the oldest historically Black churches in Central Florida, in the country's first incorporated Black township. He calls it his due service, the practice underneath everything else he builds. He also teaches selectively, working with drummers developing their own voice behind the kit.
